Future Vision 2025: Evolving Leadership for a Changing UK

May 21, 2025

The Leadership Centre’s flagship programme, Future Vision, has long stood as a beacon for senior leaders navigating the complexities of public service. Since its inception in 2012, the programme has continually adapted to meet the dynamic challenges faced by leaders across the UK. The 2025 iteration marks a significant evolution, reflecting the more rapidly shifting landscape of UK governance and the pressing need for adaptive, cross-sector leadership.

A Programme Reflecting a Changing Nation

Future Vision 2025 is more than a leadership programme; it is a response to the UK’s ongoing devolution and politics – and the complexities that come with them. As focus and power increasingly decentralise, leaders are seeking to be equipped to operate across more diverse systems, agendas and communities. This 2025 programme embraces this reality by taking place in various locations across the UK, engaging directly with frontline practitioners and communities. This approach ensures that learning is grounded in real-world contexts, fostering a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within different regions.

Building on a Strong Foundation

While Future Vision 2025 introduces new elements, it retains the core underpinnings that have made the programme so highly-acclaimed over the past decade by stretching participants knowledge and deployment of adaptive leadership, cultural competence and political nous. Participants will also still benefit from the immersive experience of a residential in Boston, USA, where they will engage with academics from globally-renowned institutions like MIT. This international perspective complements the UK-based modules, providing a comprehensive view of leadership in a global context. The programme also continues to offer personalised coaching, peer learning, and a focus on systems. By combining these elements with new content and experiences, Future Vision 2025 ensures that participants will be better-equipped to lead in today’s complex environment.

Mark Rogers, Chief Executive of the Leadership Centre, emphasises the importance of evolution in leadership development:

Mark Rogers

“Leadership programmes which don’t move with the times become stagnant and unable to support leaders with the realities of the issues they face day-to-day. The pressures on leaders right now are unlike anything we’ve seen before. Many are grappling with serious financial strain, complex governance issues, changing politics and rapid technological innovation, creating the need for leadership which is sharper and more agile than ever.

At the same time, there’s a general recognition that the gap between organisations and the people they serve is widening. Communities want to feel seen and heard, and leaders need the tools and ability to respond in ways that build trust and real connection. That’s why we’re evolving Future Vision — not just for the sake of it, but because standing still isn’t an option.

This is about making sure we’re giving leaders the very best chance to rise to the challenge. We’re proud to be reshaping the programme to reflect what’s happening on the ground — and to keep pushing for the kind of leadership the UK really needs right now.”

Ken Perry, Future Vision Programme Director, highlights the thoughtful design of Future Vision 2025:

Ken Perry

“We’ve designed Future Vision 2025 to be more than just a programme — it’s a leadership journey rooted in real places, with real people, and built on world-class thinking. We’ve worked closely with an incredible group of academic partners to shape the learning experience, from MIT in Boston to the Universities of Birmingham, Wrexham, Manchester Metropolitan and Plymouth Marjon, right here in the UK. Each brings a different lens, from systems leadership and innovation to adaptive practice and organisational learning — and our participants will be right at the heart of it.

This year, whilst the programme is book-ended by sessions at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor, we’re taking Future Vision on the road, with sessions in places that reflect the diversity and complexity of public service today. We’ll be exploring place-based regeneration and how leadership can unlock potential in areas facing some of the toughest challenges. And we’ll be working with frontline practitioners and communities in cities and regions that are feeling the sharp end of devolution.

The Boston residential remains a powerful part of the experience — a chance to step outside the UK and reflect with top thinkers from across the Atlantic. But just as valuable are the conversations happening in local communities back home, where innovation is often born out of necessity.

It’s been a real privilege to curate this year’s programme — and what’s most exciting is the group we’ve already brought together. We’ve got a fantastic cohort of senior leaders lined up from local government, health, the civil service and beyond. This is a programme built to stretch, support and inspire them — and I can’t wait to get started.”
