Developing a guide to becoming a councillor in England

Jan 17, 2008

We’re delighted to share with you our latest publication, produced in collaboration with the Local Government Association. ‘People like you are councillors – your guide to becoming a councillor in England’ has been developed to help prospective leaders within the community understand more about the realities of standing for election.

The publication is for anyone who has ever thought about becoming a local councillor – perhaps those who are already involved in local affairs and want to take the next step or people who are keen to do something rewarding which will help their community.

The booklet includes case studies of councillors from across the political spectrum, practical information about what councillors do, how councils work and how to take the first steps into political life.

There are roughly 20,000 elected councillors in England. Each representing their local community, all with their own reason for doing so. We hope that this booklet helps people decide on whether to take the plunge and go for a seat on their local council – especially those who may come from groups which are currently under-represented
